St. Louis County vs. St. Louis City Records

Florissant is in St. Louis County, not the independent city of St. Louis. The two jurisdictions are completely separate and do not share vital records offices or databases. If you need a death certificate for a death that occurred in Florissant, you contact the St. Louis County Office of Vital Records in Berkeley or Clayton. If you need a death certificate for a death in the city of St. Louis, you contact the St. Louis City Recorder of Deeds at City Hall.

This distinction trips up a lot of people. St. Louis County surrounds the independent city of St. Louis on three sides, and many suburban municipalities including Florissant are part of the county. When in doubt, the county's vital records office staff can help confirm whether a specific address falls within county jurisdiction or the independent city's jurisdiction.
