Joplin's Dual County Jurisdiction

Joplin is one of the few Missouri cities that spans two counties. The western part of the city falls in Jasper County and the eastern part falls in Newton County. This matters for older records. For deaths from 1980 to the present, the Joplin Health Department is the single point of contact regardless of which county side of the city the death occurred in. The department handles all Joplin vital records centrally.

For historical records in the Missouri State Archives, the county where the death occurred determines which county you search. If you are not sure whether a pre-1980 death occurred on the Jasper or Newton County side, try searching both counties in the Archives database. The FamilySearch Jasper County genealogy page lists resources for the Jasper County portion of the Joplin area including probate records and cemetery transcriptions. Similar resources exist for Newton County genealogy research.

If you have questions about which county a specific address falls in, the Joplin Health Department staff can usually help determine which county the death was registered under for pre-1980 records.
