One of the most convenient features of this office is that walk-in requests are processed while you wait, with certificates printed on the same visit.

Access is limited to those who qualify under state law. You must be a first-degree relative of the person named on the certificate, or provide legal documentation showing your eligibility. Acceptable legal documents include a beneficiary deed, a transfer-on-death (TOD) title, a Social Security award letter, a probate letter, or a signed legal retainer. If you do not fall into one of these categories, you will need to submit through the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City, which handles access requests that involve more complex eligibility situations.

The Missouri State Archives holds over 2.5 million digitized death certificates from 1910 through 1975. For deaths before 1910, the Missouri Birth and Death Records Database, Pre-1910 indexes microfilmed records from the 1883 to 1893 period and is free to use. Under RSMo 193.145, all modern Missouri death certificates are filed electronically through the MoEVR system. Historical records in the Archives database are open to anyone at no cost with no proof of relationship required.
