Callaway County Death Index in the Missouri State Archives
The Missouri State Archives has over 2.5 million digitized death certificates from 1910 through 1975. Callaway County records from this period are free to search at the Archives Death Certificates portal. Search by first name, last name, county, and year or month. For deaths from 1954 through 1975, the database also supports searching by a surviving spouse, father, or mother name. Each certificate includes the decedent's full name, date and place of death, birth date and state, both parents' names, spouse, occupation, cause of death, physician, funeral home, and burial location. Under RSMo 193.145, all new Missouri death certificates are now filed through the MoEVR electronic system.
Callaway County was organized in 1820 and is known as "The Kingdom of Callaway," a nickname with roots in the Civil War era when the county reportedly negotiated its own terms with Union forces. The county seat of Fulton is home to Westminster College and the National Churchill Museum. The presence of a college and state correctional facilities in Fulton means the county has seen deaths from a wider cross-section of people than a purely agricultural county of similar size. Those populations show up in historical records. For deaths before 1910, the Missouri Birth and Death Records Database, Pre-1910 covers the early registration period from 1883 to 1893. Callaway County's records from that window are useful for families with roots in the county going back to the mid-1800s.
The FamilySearch Callaway County genealogy page lists collections available for the county, including probate records from the Callaway County Courthouse and digitized materials available through FamilySearch libraries. This is a good reference when you're looking for someone who died before state registration began.
What Callaway County Death Records Contain
A certified Callaway County death certificate lists the decedent's full legal name, date and place of death, date and state of birth, sex, race, marital status, and occupation. It also shows both parents' names including the mother's maiden name, the surviving spouse's name, cause of death and contributing conditions, the attending physician or coroner, funeral home details, and burial location. The informant who gave data at registration is also named. If you need the long form certificate with extended medical certification, request that version from the state Bureau in Jefferson City. Mark that option clearly on your application when you submit.
Records from 1910 to 1975 in the Archives database contain the same basic data fields. Older certificates from the early decades of state registration may have fewer entries because the forms were simpler. Medical language on older records can be difficult to interpret. The Archives offers a medical terminology guide and a historical cause-of-death reference. Terms like "lung fever," "putrid sore throat," and "dropsy" appear on many pre-1940 certificates and are explained in those tools.
Certified copies of death certificates from within the past 50 years are restricted under RSMo 193.255. For records more than 50 years old, no proof of relationship is needed and the Archives portal is free and open to all.
