The Pettis County Health Department website provides details on vital records services, including what to bring for an in-person visit and how to submit a mail request.
Check the site for current office hours and any updates to fees or procedures before visiting or mailing a request to the Sedalia office.
To request a death certificate in person, bring a completed Application for Missouri Vital Record and a valid photo ID. A state driver's license, state ID, U.S. military ID, U.S. passport, school ID, or work ID all count as primary identification. Without a photo ID, two alternate forms work. These can include letters from government agencies, W-2 forms, Social Security cards, court-certified adoption papers, insurance policies, Medicare or Medicaid cards, payroll stubs, cancelled checks, or utility bills.
Mail requests must include a notarized application, a self-addressed stamped envelope, and a check or money order made out to the Pettis County Health Department. Notarization is required for mail submissions but not for in-person visits. Processing at the local level is generally faster than submitting to the state Bureau in Jefferson City, which can take 4 to 8 weeks to return a mail request.
Pettis County was organized in 1833 and has a long local record base. Sedalia grew as a railroad hub in the late 1800s, which means the county drew residents from many other parts of Missouri and beyond. That mobility is worth keeping in mind when searching for older death records, as the person you are looking for may have been born elsewhere even if they died in Pettis County.

Pettis County Death Index in the Missouri State Archives
The Missouri State Archives holds over 2.5 million digitized death certificates from 1910 through 1975. Pettis County death records from that period are freely searchable through the Archives Death Certificates portal. You can search by first name, last name, county, and year or month of death. For deaths from 1954 through 1975, the database also allows searches by the name of a surviving spouse, father, or mother. That cross-reference feature helps when you know a relative's name but not the name on the actual certificate. Each digitized record shows the full name of the deceased, date and place of death, birth date and state, parents' names, spouse's name, occupation, cause of death, attending physician, funeral home, and burial location.
Pettis County was organized in 1833, well before statewide death registration started in 1910. For deaths before that year, the Missouri Birth and Death Records Database, Pre-1910 covers microfilmed records from 1883 to 1893. Other pre-1910 sources for Pettis County include probate court records at the courthouse in Sedalia, cemetery transcriptions, church records from the county's various religious communities, and newspaper archives from Sedalia, which had active local papers by the 1870s.
Under RSMo 193.145, all current Missouri death certificates are filed electronically through the MoEVR system. Records from recent years go through this statewide electronic process before they become accessible through county or state offices.
The FamilySearch Pettis County genealogy page lists available collections and microfilm holdings for county research, including older vital and court records. FamilySearch provides free access to many of these items online.
Note: Missouri Digital Heritage at sos.mo.gov provides free access to Pettis County death certificates from 1910 through 1975 through the same Archives portal linked above.
What Pettis County Death Records Contain
A certified Pettis County death certificate includes the decedent's full legal name, date and place of death, date and state of birth, sex, race, occupation, and both parents' full names including the mother's maiden name. It also lists the name of a surviving spouse, cause of death and contributing conditions, the attending physician, funeral home details, and burial location. The informant who gave the data at the time of registration is named on the form.
Long form certificates with extended medical certification language are only available from the Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City. The Pettis County Health Department in Sedalia can only issue the standard certified short form. If you need the long form, indicate that on the application when you submit to the state office.
Records in the 1910 to 1975 State Archives database contain the same core fields, though older certificates may be less detailed because the forms used in earlier decades were simpler. Medical language on older records can differ from modern usage. The State Archives publishes a terminology guide and conditions dictionary to help researchers interpret historical cause-of-death language, which sometimes includes obsolete diagnostic terms.
Access to recent Pettis County death certificates is restricted. Only those who can show a direct and tangible interest under RSMo 193.255 may receive certified copies within the 50-year window. For deaths more than 50 years ago, no proof of relationship is required. The records are freely available to view online through the State Archives portal, which makes them open to genealogists, attorneys, and researchers of all kinds without any application fee.
