Randolph County Death Index in the Missouri State Archives
The Missouri State Archives holds over 2.5 million digitized death certificates covering the period from 1910 through 1975. Randolph County records from this span are searchable at no cost through the Archives Death Certificates portal. Search by first name, last name, county, and year or month of death. For records from 1954 through 1975, the database also supports searches by surviving spouse, father, or mother. Each certificate shows the full name of the deceased, date and place of death, birth information, both parents' names, spouse's name, occupation, cause of death, attending physician, funeral home, and burial location.
Randolph County was organized in 1829 and sits in north-central Missouri. Moberly's role as a railroad hub meant the county had a diverse working population through much of the 20th century, which is reflected in the variety of occupations listed across the death records in the Archives database. Searching by county and a date range tends to work well given the county's moderate record volume.
For deaths before 1910, the Missouri Birth and Death Records Database, Pre-1910 covers microfilmed records from roughly 1883 to 1893. Randolph County records from the early registration period are incomplete in spots. Probate court documents at the Randolph County Courthouse in Huntsville, cemetery transcriptions, and church records from Huntsville and Moberly area congregations are useful supplements. Newspaper archives from the county's early papers are also worth checking for obituaries and death notices.
Under RSMo 193.145, all current Missouri death certificates are filed electronically through the MoEVR system. Every recent Randolph County death is registered centrally and accessible through the state Bureau and the local health department once the record is complete.
The FamilySearch Randolph County genealogy page lists available record collections including probate filings, census data, and early vital records. Many are free to view online through FamilySearch and complement the State Archives database, especially for the pre-1910 period.
Note: Missouri Digital Heritage at sos.mo.gov provides free access to Randolph County death certificates from 1910 through 1975 through the same Archives portal linked above.
What Randolph County Death Records Show
A certified Randolph County death certificate lists the decedent's full legal name, date and place of death, date and state of birth, sex, race, and occupation. Both parents are named, including the mother's maiden name. The surviving spouse is listed, along with the cause of death and contributing conditions, the attending physician, the funeral home, and the burial location. The informant who provided data at registration is also identified. Long form certificates are only available through the Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City. If you need the long form, mark that option on your application.
Records in the State Archives from 1910 through 1975 carry the same core fields, though earlier forms are simpler and some entries may be incomplete. Cause-of-death language on certificates from the 1910s and 1920s can be unusual. The Archives provides a medical terminology guide to help interpret those entries. For Randolph County, the presence of railroad workers in the historical record means occupational categories like "railroad laborer" or "machinist" appear frequently in records from the early to mid-20th century.
Access to recent Randolph County death certificates is restricted under RSMo 193.255. Only those with a direct and tangible interest may receive certified copies within the 50-year window. For deaths more than 50 years ago, records are public and free to search through the State Archives. No relationship proof is required for older records.
