Camden County records from this range are free to search at the Archives Death Certificates portal. Search by name, county, year, and month. For deaths between 1954 and 1975, searching by surviving spouse, father, or mother name is also supported. Each digitized certificate shows the decedent's full name, date and place of death, birth date and state, both parents' names, spouse, occupation, cause of death, attending physician, funeral home, and burial location. Under RSMo 193.145, all new Missouri death certificates are filed through the MoEVR electronic system.
Camden County was organized in 1841 and covers a large area around the Lake of the Ozarks. The lake itself was created in 1931 with the construction of Bagnell Dam, which flooded portions of Morgan and Camden counties. Families who had lived in the flooded areas before 1931 may have records at addresses that no longer exist. Genealogists researching pre-dam families in this area should keep that context in mind when trying to locate records and cemetery sites. For deaths before 1910, the Missouri Birth and Death Records Database, Pre-1910 covers the 1883 to 1893 microfilmed records. Camden County's early records reflect a sparsely populated rural area before the lake development changed the region.
The FamilySearch Camden County genealogy page lists record collections available for the county, including early probate records from the courthouse in Camdenton and other local collections. Check this page before contacting the local health department or the state Bureau.
What Camden County Death Records Include
A certified Camden County death certificate lists the decedent's full legal name, date and place of death, date and state of birth, sex, race, marital status, and occupation. The record also shows both parents' names including the mother's maiden name, the surviving spouse's name, cause of death and contributing conditions, the attending physician or coroner, funeral home information, and burial place. The informant who gave data at registration is identified as well. If you need the long form certificate with full medical certification, that version is only available from the state Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City. Note that choice on your application when you submit.
Records from the 1910 to 1975 period in the Archives database have the same core fields. Earlier certificates may have less detail because older registration forms were simpler. Medical terms on pre-1950 records can be hard to understand. The Archives offers a medical terminology guide and a historical cause-of-death reference to help researchers work through what they find. Terms like "fever," "flux," and "croup" appear often on older Missouri certificates.
Certified copies of recent Camden County death certificates are restricted under RSMo 193.255. For records more than 50 years old, the Archives database is free and open to anyone. No proof of relationship is needed to search or view those older records.
