Warren County Death Index in the Missouri State Archives
The Missouri State Archives holds over 2.5 million digitized death certificates from 1910 through 1975. Warren County death records from that period are freely searchable at no cost through the Archives Death Certificates portal. You can search by first name, last name, county, and year or month of death. For deaths from 1954 through 1975, the database also lets you search by the name of a surviving spouse, father, or mother. That option helps when you know a relative's name but not the name of the decedent. Each digitized certificate shows the decedent's full name, date and place of death, date and state of birth, both parents' names, spouse's name, occupation, cause of death, attending physician, funeral home details, and burial location.
For deaths before 1910, the Missouri Birth and Death Records Database, Pre-1910 indexes microfilmed records from the 1883 to 1893 period. Warren County was organized in 1833, so its documented history runs well before statewide registration began. Probate court records at the Warren County Courthouse in Warrenton, church registers, and cemetery transcriptions fill many of the gaps for that earlier period. Under RSMo 193.145, all modern Missouri death certificates are now filed electronically through the MoEVR system, ensuring consistent statewide recording going forward.
The FamilySearch Warren County genealogy page lists available digitized resources and microfilm collections for the county. FamilySearch is free and covers Warren County records that go beyond what the Archives database holds, including early probate filings and church records from the Warrenton area. This is a useful starting point for researchers looking for deaths in the county before 1910.
Note: Missouri Digital Heritage at sos.mo.gov provides free access to Warren County death certificates from 1910 through 1975 through the Archives portal linked above.
What Warren County Death Records Contain
A certified Warren County death certificate includes the decedent's full legal name, date and place of death, date and state of birth, sex, race, occupation, and parents' full names including the mother's maiden name. The certificate also lists the surviving spouse, cause of death and any contributing conditions, attending physician, funeral home details, and burial location. The informant who provided data at the time of registration is named on the form. Long form certificates with extended medical certification language are only available from the state Bureau in Jefferson City. Mark the long form option on your application if that is what you need.
Certificates from the 1910 to 1975 Archives window contain the same core fields, though earlier forms sometimes included fewer details. Medical terminology on older Warren County records can be difficult to interpret, and the Archives provides a terminology guide for that reason. Access to recent Warren County death certificates is restricted under RSMo 193.255. For genealogy work on deaths more than 50 years old, no proof of relationship is needed and the records are free to search at the Archives portal.
